On March 13th into 14th, 2025, a breathtaking blood moon total eclipse will take place – and we can see the whole thing from Vegas! This total lunar eclipse is the first one in three years.
A blood worm moon
The upcoming celestial event is actually called a “Blood Worm Moon”. Let’s break that down!
It’s called worm because this is what a full moon taking place in March is called. The origins of the name come from the Native Americans, who used this event to mark worm trails appearing on freshly thawed ground. It meant that the season is about to change. Other names given to the March moon include the Eagle Moon, the Sugar Moon, the Wind Strong Moon, and more.
It’s a blood moon because it will be during a total eclipse, when the moon falls within the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, called “umbra”. Because of its position, it appears to have a red or orange color.
The eclipse from Vegas
The total period of time when the moon is completely covered by the Earth’s shadow will last for approximately 1 hour.
For observers in the Pacific, the moon will be high in the sky during totality – which makes it great for a gatherings and moon gazing. In Las Vegas, the prime time to see the eclipse is at 23:58, according to timeanddate. Parts of the event will also be visible between 22:09 and 01:47.
The skies in Vegas are expected to be mostly clear that night – so we’re in luck!
