Huge news in the nature field: for the first time in a decade, Death Valley National Park is bursting with vibrant life. Typically recognized as the ‘hottest place on Earth’, the desert landscape is now covered in a brilliant carpet of gold, purple, and pink. If you’re looking to swap the glow of Sin City for one of nature’s most spectacular displays, 2026 is the year to make the short trek across the border. This wonderful escape is just a quick 2 hour drive from Vegas.
What’s triggering the 2026 superbloom?

It’s pretty much magic! It takes a highly specific, almost perfect sequence of weather events to transform this spot into a thriving flowery garden. The reason for this year’s bloom? A historically soggy 2025 fall, with a record-breaking 2.41 inches of precipitation.
This unusual moisture, coupled with mild winter temperatures, allowed dormant seeds – which can hide beneath the dirt for over 10 years – to finally germinate. Even the valley’s typically harsh winds were accompanied by enough rainfall to give these fragile desert blossoms a chance.
The last time locals were treated to a floral event of this magnitude was back in 2016.
Where to see the superbloom
The National Park Service notes that the blossoms will gradually shift to higher altitudes as the weather warms up toward the summer Right now, the hot spots for low-elevation viewing include:
- North Badwater Road (between State Route 190 and Badwater Basin): look for Desert Gold and Brown-eyed Primrose.
- South Badwater Road (near Ashford Mill): check out Sand Verbena and Desert Gold.
- Highway 190 (between Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells): spot the famous Mojave Desert Star and Brown-eyed Primrose.
- North Highway: another ideal spot for Desert Gold, but also Suncups.
