The future Las Vegas Museum of Art (LVMA) and the City of Las Vegas are teaming up to debut Family Album. This contemporary art exhibit was originally set to premiere on September 4 at the brand-new Civic Center Art Gallery, but it has later been rescheduled for October. Located inside the Civic Center Building and Plaza downtown, this will be the first public event from LVMA!
What’s LVMA?
LVMA, or the Las Vegas Museum of Art, is a museum created through a unique public-private partnership. It’s meant to serve the city’s vibrant and diverse community.
Family Album will mark the official launch of the Civic Center Art Gallery, and it represents a major step forward in Vegas’ growing efforts to make art and culture a bigger part of our everyday life. The exhibition is curated by none other than the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
“This first exhibition with LACMA is the beginning of an exciting partnership,” said Heather Harmon, executive director of LVMA. “It shows how powerful museums can be when they collaborate—sharing ideas, resources, and a commitment to the people they serve.”
Mayor Shelley Berkley added: “Las Vegas is a place where imagination thrives, and we’re proud to create new spaces like this gallery and the future Las Vegas Museum of Art to showcase local culture and creativity.”
Family Album – from LA to LV

The museum’s first exhibition explores how personal and shared histories are shaped through something we all have and value…family photographs. The featured artists reflect on themes like home, memory, identity, displacement, and belonging. The inspiration is drawn from personal photo archives or reinterpreting classic family snapshots in powerful and thought-provoking ways.
Featured artists include:
- Laura Aguilar
- Lyle Ashton Harris
- Renee Cox
- Delilah Montoya
- Consuelo Kanaga
- Max Yavno
- Carlee Fernande

Using photography, a medium that naturally evokes memory and connection, the exhibition invites you to reflect on how we remember and represent our communities and loved ones. It was originally shown at LACMA’s Charles White Elementary School Gallery in L.A. as part of a local engagement initiative, and it’s now traveling to Vegas as part of a long-term collaboration between LACMA and the future LVMA.
