If you live in or around Vegas, you know that finding natural, rushing water in the desert is like striking gold – especially during warmer years. But right now, thanks to recent winter precipitation (ignore last weekend’s heat) and spring snowmelt, one of the city’s most wonderful natural wonders is putting on a show: the seasonal waterfall at Ice Box Canyon.
Yes, it’s worth the hike
Located just 30 minutes from the lights of the Strip, inside Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, this trail is the ultimate local escape. The hike guides you directly into a narrow path that rarely sees the sun. True to its name, this natural ‘ice box’ stays significantly cooler than the rest of the valley. But the real prize comes at the end of the 2.6-mile adventure. Hikers will be rewarded with a stunning, cold waterfall spilling over the canyon walls.
The Ice Box Canyon waterfall is flowing…but not for long
Here’s the catch (and why you need to text your friends today): this waterfall is very seasonal. It does not flow year-round. Once the intense Nevada heat officially sets in for the summer, this desert oasis will completely dry up, transforming back into a dry rock wall until next year. Therefore, you see why you only have a couple of weeks to check out this hidden spot. But either way – the hike is super fun to do anytime.
Don’t forget to plan ahead!
If you want to chase the falls, you have to plan ahead. Red Rock Canyon requires timed entry reservations for the Scenic Loop from October through May, so you cannot just show up at the gates. Secure your time slot online, wear shoes with solid grip for the boulder hopping, and get out there before the desert turns the tap off.
