Vegas skywatchers are in for a celestial treat tonight, August 27, 2026! A deep partial lunar eclipse graces the night sky – and it’s at a decent time, so no excuses for missing this one.
Often referred to as a ‘blood moon’, this spectacular event occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. At its peak, Earth’s shadow will swallow roughly 93% to 96% of the lunar surface. Instead of going completely dark, the moon will glow with a coppery reddish-orange hue. How beautiful does that sound?!
Catch the partial lunar eclipse from Vegas
For us, the timing couldn’t be better. The partial phase of the eclipse begins at 7:33 PM, shortly after the moon rises above the eastern horizon. The main event – maximum eclipse – will occur right in prime time at 9:12 PM, when the moon is highest and deepest in the Earth’s shadow. The colorful partial phase will wrap up around 11 PM.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye. No protective glasses are required. For the best experience, head away from the bright glow of the Strip and find a spot with a clear, unobstructed view of the East-southeast horizon. While binoculars or a small telescope aren’t strictly necessary, they will give you a breathtakingly close-up look – but it’s definitely doable for all. Enjoy the show!
