If you think the Mojave Desert is a massive collection of brown and tumbleweeds (okay, sometimes it is), you need to explore it during these magical spring weeks. While everyone is talking about the massive superblooms in California, Vegas locals have their own spectacular, highly seasonal desert bloom happening. Oh, and it’s right in our backyard.
Peak spring bloom in Valley of Fire State Park
Right now, Valley of Fire State Park is experiencing its peak spring wildflower season. Located just 45 minutes northeast of the Strip, the park’s iconic, red Aztec sandstone is covered in bursts of color.
Because the Mojave is an extreme environment, these blooms do not last long. If you head out over the next few weeks, you’ll be rewarded with a surreal sight. Check out bright fuchsia beavertail cacti, yellow desert marigolds, and indigo bushes. The contrast of the colorful petals against the red rocks makes for some of the best hiking and photography you’ll find in Nevada all year!
Hurry up – the spring bloom won’t last long

You have to act fast! This colorful transformation only happens during a very brief window in March and April. Once the triple-digit heat arrives (and you know we’re experiencing a crazy year), the spring bloom will completely vanish.
To catch the best views, grab your hiking boots and hit accessible routes like the Fire Wave Trail or the White Domes Loop. Pack plenty of water, and remember the golden rule of wildflower hunting. You can take as many photos as you want, but stay on the trails and never step on the blooms!
