For thousands of Vegas children (and beyond), Dolly Parton wasn’t just a country music legend. She was also the name on a book that showed up in the mailbox every month. The magic happened through the Imagination Library, a program inspired by Dolly’s father’s inability to read or write. It started as a local effort in Tennessee – but years later, it was all over the nation, making children ‘richer’ one by one.
What was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library?
In hopes of inspiring a love of reading and learning from a young age, the program mailed a free, age-appropriate book to registered children. Each and every month. The first book order totaled 1,760 books.
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library came to Clark County in 2023 through Storied Kids, a local nonprofit founded by Meredith and Matt Helmick. The program began mailing books to children under 5 in July of that year, after Storied Kids received a $920,000 grant from Nevada’s Early Childhood Innovative Literacy Program.
The response was huge. By 2025, more than 18,000 Clark County children were receiving an Imagination Library book each month. For families, the books represented something simple, yet so important: a new story to read together, delivered directly to their homes. All for free.
Then the funding ran out.
What happened to the program?
The state’s 2023 grant was not renewed during the 2025 legislative session. A bill that would have provided $4.6 million to expand Imagination Library statewide didn’t pass. Another potential funding source also fell through. As a result, Storied Kids announced in October 2025 that its Clark County program would end.
The loss was quite striking for the families that now relied on this contribution. One Las Vegas mother told The Nevada Independent that her children even had “Dolly days,” when they would read the new book together.
Vegas may have lost its local chapter, and the world may have now lost a rare, rare diamond: Dolly Parton. However, the memory of those books – and the children who grew up waiting for them – is part of Dolly Parton’s very real legacy here.
