Stargazers, get your cameras ready because the first major celestial event of spring is finally here. The April “Pink Moon” rolls into town on Wednesday, April 1st, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect for us Las Vegans.
Why is it called the Pink Moon?

First things first: despite the gorgeous name, the moon won’t actually look pink. The nickname comes from moss pink (or creeping phlox), a vibrant wildflower that blooms in early spring. Instead of pink, you can expect a glowing golden or orange orb when it first peeks over the horizon.
When to catch the Pink Moon
For Vegas locals, this year’s Pink Moon brings a rare and incredibly cool synchronization: moonrise and sunset are happening at the exact same time! On Wednesday, look toward the eastern horizon right around 7:02 PM. As the sun sets in the west, the full moon will dramatically rise in the east, all during the twilight blue hour.
While the absolute peak of the full moon hits shortly after at 7:13 PM the best viewing is right at moonrise. Thanks to a moon illusion, it will look more majestic as it hugs the horizon.
Bonus stargazing!
If you look closely, you’ll notice a bright blue-white speck hanging out very close to the moon. That’s Spica – the brightest star in the Virgo constellation, making a special guest appearance for this lunar show.
Best viewing spots
For the best views, head to a spot with a clear, unobstructed view of the east. Good spots include an overlook near Red Rock Canyon, the trails near Sunrise Mountain, Death Valley National Park (some of the darkest skies in U.S.), or an open park in your neighborhood. The moon will be shining bright all night long, but that exact sunset-moonrise combo is something you won’t want to miss. Happy stargazing!
