If you search for cherry blossoms in Vegas, you’ll usually be pointed toward Bellagio’s spring display the Strip, or the pear blossoms in Summerlin’s Garden Park. However, the most authentic Japanese celebration of the season happens entirely off the boulevard – and it’s returning this April.
Haru Matsuri, a Japanese spring celebration
On Saturday, April 4, the Kizuna Japanese Society is bringing its 9th Annual Haru Matsuri (spring festival) back to the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza inside Lorenzi Park. If you’re looking for a vibrant, community-driven weekend hangout, this is your ultimate spring activity. The best part? General admission to this festival is 100% free.
What to do (and eat) at the festival
(the reel above is from last year’s edition – don’t mind the dates)
You can spend the afternoon watching powerful live Taiko drum performances, participating in a traditional open-air tea ceremony (Nodate), or even getting dressed in a summer kimono for the perfect photo op. The festival is packed with interactive cultural booths highlighting everything from calligraphy and origami to martial arts demonstrations.
Of course, the food is the real main event. Come hungry, because the plaza will be packed with local vendors serving up plates of takoyaki, crispy karaage (Japanese fried chicken), shaved ice, and sweet mochi. There’s even a sake and wine tasting area to explore (+21).
Know before you go
The 9th Annual Kizuna Spring Festival runs from 10 AM to 5 PM on April 4. Just remember to leave your dogs at home for this one (the plaza has a strict no-pets rule). Grab your crew, and come celebrate spring the Japanese way!
