Tucked away on Historic Route 66 in Peach Springs, the Grand Canyon Caverns are home to one of the most unusual dining experiences in the world: The Crystal Restaurant. After being closed for 3 years for construction, this iconic roadside attraction recently reopened. And if you’ve never been – this is your sign. Best part? It’s just 2 and a half hours away, making it the perfect day escape.
Why are the Grand Canyon Caverns special?
First of all…they’re incredibly old. The Grand Canyon Caverns began 345 million years ago as lime-rich mud at the bottom of an ancient sea. Over time, earthquakes and volcanic activity pushed this ocean floor upward. This created mountaintops 5,000 feet above sea level. Mildly acidic rainwater then got into the limestone, carving out underground passageways and cavities. As the climate eventually dried, evaporating water left behind the impressive calcium carbonate rock formations that decorate the caves today.

Now owned by the Havasupai Tribe, the caverns actually serve as the official check-in location for Havasupai backpacking. This makes exploring the caves – and grabbing a fantastic underground meal – the perfect activity to do the day before your hike into the actual Grand Canyon!
However, if you’re just looking for a unique idea for a date night and nothing more, this is still a great spot. For the perfect day, book a ‘Combo Tour’. Your experience begins with a guided walk through the 345-million-year-old cave system. Following that you’ll take a seat in the cavern dining area, which features 360-degree views of the largest chamber in the system. Because you’re so deep underground, there is no sound interference. Romantic – or / and a little bit eerie, but still very cool.
What’s on the menu?
Your food actually goes on a journey of its own. Meals are prepared fresh at ground level, lowered 21 stories down via elevator, and then hoisted 25 feet up to your table. You can choose between a lunch seating (featuring options like the Grand Canyon Bison Patty or Slothy Pulled Pork) or a dinner seating (think a hearty Ribeye or a juicy burger). Vegan options are also available!
Because seating is incredibly limited in this natural wander, meals must be reserved in advance online. You’ve got until 11 AM on the same day for lunch, and until 2 PM for dinner reservations.
